S6E360: Babar and Father Christmas (w/ Michael May)

S6E360: Babar and Father Christmas (w/ Michael May)

What’s up, dudes? Is it BAB-ar or BaBAR? Michael May from After Lunch, Crestwood House, and Hellbent for Letterbox and I try to figure it out. Yes, we’re talking about “Babar and Father Christmas!”

Arthur, Pom, Flora, and Alexander, the royal elephant children, are playing with their monkey pal, Zephir. Soon he tells them that in man’s world, Father Christmas delivers presents to good boys and girls on Christmas Eve! After their amazement subsides, they write Father Christmas a wish list letter, but are disappointed when they don't get a reply. Ultimately, this leads to Babar's realization that the Elephants' Country needs to be included in Santa's regular route.

The King goes to heroic lengths to make his children's' wishes come true. First, he goes to the city and befriends an artist’s model. From there, he meets a geography professor with a map to Santa’s workshop. Babar makes the trek up north, and he and Father Christmas become fast friends. Father Christmas even gets to take a much needed rest in the tropical climate of Babar's country. He also gifts Babar a magical flying suit to distribute presents on Christmas Eve.

Saxophone-playing Rhino antagonists? Check. Barbarian Babar? In a joke. Elves who’ve never seen a flamingo? Only if they look like gnomes! So grab your crown, hop on a train to the city, and check your maps to this episode on “Babar and Father Christmas!”

S6E359: Motown Merry Christmas (w/ Ken Kessler)

S6E359: Motown Merry Christmas (w/ Ken Kessler)

What’s up, dudes? Motown! The sound defined the ‘60s, the acts brought joy to everyone. Ken Kessler from Sounds of Christmas and I dive into the wonderfully odd “Motown Merry Christmas!” From the Temptations to Smokey Robinson, this one celebrates Christmas the Motown way…with several non-Motown acts?!

Hosted by Miami Vice’s Philip Michael Thomas, the special begins with a version of “‘Twas the Night Before Christmas.” The Temptations then sell it hard with a rendition of “White Christmas” à la The Drifters. After the Pointer Sisters nail “Santa Claus is Comin’ to Town,” Santa Redd Foxx and elf Marsha Warfield provide some comedy. Following that, Ronnie Spector and Darlene Love sing a Christmas medley with awkward transitions between each song. They kill it so hard, though! Great stuff!

Desiree Coleman, Smokey Robinson, and Natalie Cole wow the audience with soulful carols. Of course, the Temptations sing “Silent Night.” There’s more comedy bits with Foxx and Warfield, then Run DMC and Stephanie Mills get turns to provide holiday music. Carrie McDowell, Ronnie, Darlene, and the whole crew sing us out!

Tubbs? Check. Roz? Of course. Fred Sanford? Only if he can be Santa! So spin your records, put on your tux, and jive to this episode on “Motown Merry Christmas!”

S6E358: ‘80s Wrestling pt5 (w/ Wrestling Bros)

What’s up, dudes? A couple of the Wreatling Bros—Joe Martinez from Now Watch This and Alamo City Santa Jeremy Phelps—are here to talk Prime Time Wrestling! Yes, it’s ‘80s New Year’s Wrestling with Bobby the Brain and Gorilla Monsoon!

It’s a recap show on Jan 2, 1989, as Bobby and Gorilla discuss great moments of 1988 wrestling. First up, Jimmy Powers took on Dangerous Danny Davis and lost, though Davis cheated. They proceed to talk the Summer Slam as the Intercontinental tile changed hands. Of course, the duo had to mention broke the record of title ownership with 30 seconds. He beat Hulk Hogan and gave the belt to Ted Dibiasi, which was illegal.

Subsequently they discuss new faces in the WWF: Mr. Perfect, Red Rooster, Bushwhackers, Big Boss Man. And no episode is complete without a plug for the upcoming Royal Rumble. Back to the matches, the Rockers fought Iron Mike Sharpe and Jose Estrada and won.

On Thanksgiving, Demolition battled the Powers of Pain. Harley Race abdicated and gave Haku his crown. Surprisingly, Hulk and Macho Man formed the Mega Powers. Finally, Bad News Brown went up against Bret The Hitman Hart, but the match ended in a draw.

Hacksaw Jim Duggan and the Hart Foundation? Check. Royal Rumble plugs? Every few minutes. Gorilla teasing Brain about cheap champagne? Especially after arguing about New Year’s favors! So grab your brown paper bag, put on a New Year’s hat, and call out this episode on 80s New Year’s Wrestling!”

What’s up, dudes? Remember the Mickey Mouse Club? What about its late ‘80s revival? Mike Westfall of Advent Calendar House and Tim Babb from Can’t Wait for Christmas are with me to talk “The All New Mickey Mouse Club Christmas Special!”

In this 33rd episode of the 4th season, recurring character Wendy Wallow starts a new job. She’s an elf at Mousey’s Department Store, and she’s wildly inept, constantly upsetting customers. Santa arrives and comforts her, though even he can’t get her a permanent job.

Subsequently, The Party sings “Sugar is Sweet” with panache at a ski resort. Of course, Captain Bringdown invades the Mouse Mail segment and bums everyone out. After Bill Nye the Science Guy takes some Mousketeers to the North Pole to talk about glaciers, Lurleen makes hot mulled cola. She also makes some crafts for the Christmas tree. A ‘90s pop beat Christmas medley rounds out the episode.

S6E356: Christmas Eve (w/ Jeremy Phelps)

What’s up, dudes? Alamo City Santa Jeremy Phelps joins me to dive into the 1986 made-for-tv movie “Christmas Eve!” Starring Loretta Young and Rachel’s dad from “Friends,” this melodrama has charm!

Although Amanda Kingsley is now extremely wealthy, she remembers her hardscrabble upbringing. She now spends her time trying to help the less fortunate around her. Conversely, her business-minded son, Andrew, has never wanted for anything, and has become hardhearted. Upon receiving bad medical news, Amanda engages down-at-heel private investigator Morris Huffner to track down Andrew's three estranged children. She desperately longs for one final family Christmas.

Huffner tracks down the youngest first. He is now a country singer, and vaguely knows the whereabouts of his sister. Of course, Huffner uses the lead to track down the young lady, and seemingly falls for her. Finally, Huffner finds the oldest son, who had dodged the draft by fleeing to Canada. They all come together and force a change of heart on Andrew.

A philanthropic protagonist? Check. A miserly antagonist? Got it. An Alfred Pennyworth-like butler? Definitely! So grab your notebook and track down this episode on “Christmas Eve!”

Bonus: Throwback Thursday: Wham “Last Christmas” (w/ Duane Bailey)

What’s up, dudes? Duane from Tinsel Tunes is here with me to talk about the 1984 Christmas mega hit “Last Christmas” by Wham! This catchy tune still holds a spot on most terrestrials radio playlists to this day!

Wham! soared onto the charts in ‘84 with several memorable pop songs when George Michael dreamed about having a Christmas hit. One day, while watching football, the melody came to him. Of course, he ran upstairs to his room to record it his idea, and by the end of the night, he had written a killer tune!

Featuring melodic synths and steady drum machines, the final song competed with Band Aid’s “Do They Know It’s Christmas?” for the UK Christmas #1. The music video boasts cinematic scenery, and tells the story of a jilted love. Of course, it ultimately lost the battle for #1, but Wham! donated the proceeds to famine relief efforts anyway.

What’s up, dudes? Back in the ‘80s, we all wanted Clair Huxtable to be our mom. Theo was our brother, Denise our cool older sister. In memory of Malcolm-Jamal Warner, Jeff Loftin from Lost Christmas and Joe Martinez from Now Watch This are with me to talk The Cosby Show “Father’s Day!”

In this 13th episode of the 1st season, Cliff laments the goofy gifts his children have bought him over the years. As he confronts his children wearing the strange items they’ve gifted him, he begs them to put thought into their gifts. Even though it’s almost Christmas, Theo urges the kids to get their dad some thoughtful Father’s Day gifts.

Soon after, Clair takes them all to a specialty store to shop. They kids get their gifts, and host a surprise “Father’s Day” celebration for Cliff. Subsequently, the doctor opens his gifts. While he doesn’t necessarily love each one, he is proud and grateful for the thought put into them.

Subsequently in the mall locker room, the real Santa appears and comforts and encourages Alex. Moved by his speech, he finds Michelle and her mom and invites them over for Christmas Eve. Miraculously, Michelle’s dad appears at the Keatons’s door. All’s well that ends well!

S6E353: Toys “R” Us Christmas Dream Book 1985

What’s up, dudes? It’s the greatest store ever to an ‘80s kid! Yes, it’s Toys “R” Us, the category killer! Today we’re talking the Toys “R” Us Christmas Dream Book 1985!

Toys “R” Us goes all the way back to 1948, when Charles Lazarus opened a little Washington, D.C. shop called Children’s Bargain Town, selling baby furniture. Eventually he pivoted from cribs and strollers to playthings. In 1957, Lazarus opened the first store under the Toys “R” Us name, built like a supermarket for toys—long aisles, stacked shelves, self-service shopping, and wall-to-wall kids’ stuff.

This book provides a huge variety of toys. From ThunderCats to Cabbage Patch Kids, there’s something for everyone. The My Little Pony Dream Castle provided hours of fun, and Snake Mountain gave the evil warriors a lair to lure Eternian Heroes. Of course, Sectaurs Hyve playset towered over all of them!

S6E351: Nestor the Long-Eared Christmas Donkey (w/ Jeff and Jeremy)

What's up, dudes? You never knew Santa had a donkey? Well, Jeff Loftin from Lost Christmas and Alamo City Santa Jeremy Phelps did. In fact, they’re here with me to talk all about the Rankin Bass special “Nestor the Long-Eared Christmas Donkey!”

Nestor was born with abnormally long ears. His owner mistreated him, and the other animals teased him. One night when Roman soldiers came to the stable to buy donkeys, they dismiss Nestor and take all the other donkeys for free. Enraged, Olaf casts Nestor out into the frigid cold. Nestor's mother finds him and shields from the harsh weather with her own body, freezing to death in the process.

The next day, Nestor meets a cherub named Tilly, who says that they need to travel to Bethlehem. When they reach the outskirts of the town, Tilly returns to Heaven, instructing Nestor to wait. When Mary and Joseph are expecting Jesus, they take Nestor because of his "gentle eyes", but are caught in a sandstorm. In the midst of the storm, Nestor hears Tilly's voice, but recognizes it as his mother's. She tells him to follow the voices of the angels. Nestor guides Mary and Joseph through the storm, while wrapping Mary in his ears to keep her warm. They arrive in Bethlehem, where Nestor finds the stable where Mary gives birth to Jesus. Nestor heads back home where he is hailed as hero by Olaf and the other animals.

S6E350: East Meets West: Advent (w/ Thom Crowe)

What's up, dudes? Advent is here, and it’s time to prepare for Christmas! Fr. Thom Crowe from ‘Tis the Podcast is here with me to discuss the differences between Catholic and Orthodox Advent liturgies!

How long is each one? Which one omits parts of the Ordinary? Are they both strict fasts? We get into all of it! There are striking similarities and glaring differences. The sanctoral and temporal cycles overlap, and function as a weak analogy of the hydrostatic union.

The West has more structural variation and variable parts parts, but the East has the stricter fast. We delve into the Mass/Divine Liturgy and the Office/Hours. After that, we tackle popular Advent devotions from both traditions. St. Nicholas definitely gets some play!

Gloria in excelsis? Nope. Te Deum? Uh uh. Benedicamus Domino? Definitely! So grab your folded chasuble, switch it out for a broad stole, and chant along to this episode on Catholic and Orthodox Advent liturgies!
